It has been eight weeks since California issued a statewide shelter-in-place to mandate social distancing due to COVID-19 pandemic. Like many of you, I can’t wait to go back to do the things that I want to do once the quarantined is lifted. What is the first thing you’ll do once everything goes back to normal? I would like to visit San Diego, a city on the Pacific Coast of Southern California, that is known for it’s amazing climate, beaches and parks. There is an abundance of fun attractions for visitors such as SeaWorld San Diego, Balboa Park, LEGOLAND California, San Diego Zoo and many historic parks and museums including things that are absolutely free. Having fun does not require a lot of money.
Here are a few things you can do for free when visiting San Diego.
Children’s Pool La Jolla
A tiny cove protected by a concrete breakwater. It was a swimming area for children, but now a beautiful spot to enjoy the seals that inhabit the beach year-round.
La Jolla Secret Swing
The La Jolla secret swing has a picturesque views of La Jolla shores. From the end of the Birch Aquarium parking lot, look for a narrow trail-head with a wooden bridge. Follow a short walk up to the secret swing. From time to time, this secret swing disappears and re-appears. Be sure to check Instagram to see if the “la jolla secret swing” is still there before you go.
Harper’s Topiary Garden
For years, the owners of the mansion have trained perennial plants by clipping the foliage and shrubs to develop and maintain defined shapes. The topiary garden includes dinosaur, whale, elephant, pyramids and other shapes, which is cool to see.
Spruce Street Suspension Bridge
A 375 feet long, hidden pedestrian suspension bridge that was build in 1912 and provides a nice view of the valley below. It’s fun to walk on it as the bridge can be wobbly. This bridge is about 2 miles from Harper’s Topiary Garden.
Unconditional Surrender Statue
The 25 feet tall iconic statue is based on the famous photo taken in Times Square during World War II by photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt. It weighs 6,000 pounds and located at Tuna Harbor Park. This is the perfect photo op with the statue and USS Midway in the background.
Lemon Grove Giant Lemon
The world’s largest lemon can be found in Lemon Grove, weighing 3,000 pound. It’s on the corner of Broadway and Main St next to the trolley tracks. Broadway and Lemon Grove Avenue. It’s worth to stop by only if you are in the area.
